Tears of the Kingdom is, in many ways, a game that feels like it tries to fix what Breath of the Wild did wrong while improving on what was great. In other ways, it feels like a dramatically different game with an entirely different vision of what it wants to achieve.
Beyond mere surface and sky with Link, Tears of the Kingdom introduces the depths of the game’s best-kept secrets. There are new chasms all over the world that will lead you into a brooding darkness, where there are few terrifying sights.
9 descent into the ditch
One of the most awe-inspiring things about Tears of the Kingdom is when you discover a new place, whether it’s a tiny cave hidden beneath a hill or diving from above to another island. . Depths has similar exploration goals, but its discoveries feel dramatically different.
Going down the canyon for the first time can be terrifying because you never know what will happen. Without knowing where the floor is, I slowly dive into the darkness. You reach the bottom and suddenly darkness engulfs the very groove you entered. The worst part is that the creepiness never stops.
8 pitch black
Unlike the surface and the sky, where vast horizons and a literal bird’s-eye view of the world, the depths are less forgiving. Once stopped, darkness engulfs you on all sides, requiring you to create your own light to navigate rationally.
It’s brutal because the game can’t really hold your hand here. If you see a light in the distance and dash towards it, you may find that a huge valley hidden in shadow separates you. It’s really hard to understand the lack of light and what wanders in it.
7 immeasurable height and depth
But what’s even more disturbing about Depth is that the light doesn’t make it any less disturbing. Activating Lightroots brightens parts of the map, but only the immediate surroundings.
But this is replaced by new forms of existential fear. The depths are terrifyingly huge. Even when filled with light, it doesn’t go far enough to show where the ceiling is or how far the deep drop goes. It’s like knowing the depth of the ocean.
6 giant bargainer
In Breath of the Wild, there’s a simple statue hidden in a prominent location outside Hateno Village that, when spoken to, offers a bargain, meaning either hearts or stamina in exchange for powering the other side. It was something It was a disturbing mechanism, but one that you could freely engage with.
In Tears of the Kingdom, these negotiator statues are much more prevalent, scattered throughout the depths as a collective network. Every word they speak feels like it’s wrapped in a curse. The most impressive of these bargainer statues is a tremendously large statue hidden deep underground in the central abandoned mineshaft.
Five Enemy that glows in the distance
In the deep sea, the only forces that guide you are your wits and a few limited sources of light, most of which must come from you or from Lightroute. Terrible things remain in the dark waiting for an opportunity to attack you.
But most infuriating are the enemies that can be seen glowing from a mile away. These enemies are shrouded in darkness and attacks from them will take your mind away. They like to stand out and usually roam around the Zonite mines, but you’d better be prepared for a literally life-draining fight.
Four abandoned mine
For many people in Hyrule, the deep sea is a new discovery. They are remnants of the Zonai tribe, perhaps a common culture between them and the people of Hyrule. In any case, it has long been buried and its purpose long forgotten.
Abandoned mines, abandoned structures, and decaying remains of equipment can be found throughout the Depths. No one knows how long it was left unused. Even just riding the minecart down the tracks is a terrifying experience, and you can feel the silence of the mine as the tracks creak.
3 burr hideout
Unfortunately, Hyrule’s brightest people aren’t the only ones who have recently rediscovered the depths. Mixed with the dark inhabitants of the deep sea is the Yiga clan. Following their master’s literal descent in Breath of the Wild, they established camps and outposts in their new homeworld.
Encountering terrifying creatures and bottomless pits is terrible enough, but Yiga’s presence only adds to the terror. Their outposts are bandaged and glowing with salvaged Zonai devices. They make the light look terrifying and create death machines designed to destroy anything that comes their way.
2 spirit of the past
Depths is unsettling and spooky, but we must realize that much of it comes from the darkness. It had the practical purpose of mining zonites. It’s just because of its gloomy and forgettable nature that it’s so uncomfortable and sends shivers down your spine.
Until I saw a ghost. Not just Poe, but ghost warriors wielding pristine blades. They don’t say a word, they just solemnly hold out their weapons. I don’t know why it’s still going on, and I can’t help but tremble.
1 towering statue
All of ancient history is frightening when not understood. Even in the original Breath of the Wild, I was disturbed by the fact that the Zonai ruins across the Fallon region were still there, even though their creators had vanished without a trace.
Of course, The Depths takes that feeling to the extreme. There are statues all over it. Some are decorative, while others point to a destination. Therefore, some may look like mere chunks of rock. Mistakes that are easy to make in the dark. But when the light comes in and you take a step back, you’re stunned by the sheer size of these statues and what they were probably meant to depict.
